Hazing Policy

The University of Miami has an absolute prohibition on hazing. Hazing is defined as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act or situation committed on or off campus by a person (whether individually or in concert with other persons) against another person or persons regardless of the willingness of such other person or persons to participate.

Alleged violations of the hazing policy can be reported by calling the University of Miami Police Department at 305-284-6666, the Dean of Students Office at 305-284-5353, or reported online using instructions at doso.miami.edu.

  • Educational Initiatives

    The University of Miami provides a comprehensive campus-wide education program to prevent hazing on campus. This program includes mandatory training for all incoming students and communication to all university community members including faculty and staff. The university requires all students and all incoming students to complete the Vector Solutions Hazing Awareness and Prevention for Students online educational module. In addition, research informed semesterly in person education and training is provided to all student organizations including all members of Greek organizations and student athletes. Annual programming and awareness events also occur during National Hazing Prevention Week. All Campus Security Authorities are advised on a yearly basis of their duty to report any possible violations of the hazing policy to campus police. Faculty and staff identified as Campus Security Authorities are required to complete annual Hazing prevention training as a part of their responsibilities.

  • Investigative Procedure

    Alleged violations of the hazing policy will be investigated following the University Level Conduct Procedures, Major Level Conduct Procedures and/or the Conduct Procedures for Student Organizations as described in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook at miami.edu/srr.

  • Hazing Transparency Report

    Name of Student Organization: Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity/Alpha Chi Chapter

    Description of Incident: During an investigation into an anonymous hazing complaint, it was determined that members of the organization forced or coerced new members to do extreme calisthenics, eat peppers, and participate in line ups where they were in reasonable fear of bodily harm through the use of threatening words and conduct. The organization was found Responsible for violating the Hazing policy. The violation did NOT involve the abuse or illegal use of alcohol or drugs. The organization was suspended until Monday, August 17, 2026. The organization was also required to comply with all the terms and conditions as outlined by their national fraternity in a comprehensive remedial action plan.
